Degree Requirements

Important milestones for the Ph.D. 

Year 1: 

•  Select a laboratory for dissertation research. There is an option for a rotation through two labs.

•  Complete two of the four core courses. (The core courses are PNB 5302, 6417, 6418, and 6426.)

•  Must pass a written examination at the end of the first year.

 

Year 2: 

•  Form an advisory committee and submit a plan of study.

•  Complete remaining core courses. (The core courses are PNB 5302, 6417, 6418, and 6426.)

•  Work on dissertation research and generate preliminary results for general examination.

 

Year 3: 

•  Must pass a general examination , which consists of a written research proposal in NIH format, an oral presentation, and defense of the proposal.

•  Take additional courses as prescribed by the plan of study.

 

Years 4-6: 

•  Dissertation proposal: A written dissertation proposal must be approved by the advisory committee and submitted to the Graduate School at least six months prior to dissertation defense.

•  Final examination (Dissertation defense) : Must present a written dissertation to the advisory committee at least four weeks prior to the public oral defense.

 

Other requirements: 

•  Participate in weekly Journal Club.

•  Attend departmental seminars.

•  Must complete 44 credits.

  

Requirements for the Plan A (Research) Master’s Degree 

•  Select a laboratory for dissertation research.

• Complete all of the four core courses. (The core courses are PNB 5302, 6417, 6418, and 6426.)

•  Must pass a written examination at the end of the first year.

•  Must have at least 21 credits of course work and not fewer than 9 additional credits of Master’s Thesis Research (GRAD 5950  or GRAD 5960).

•  Thesis defense : Must have a written thesis approved by an advisory committee and make a public presentation of the research.

•  Participate in weekly Journal Club.

•  Attend departmental seminars.

  

Requirements for the Plan B (Course work) Master’s Degree 

•  Complete all of the four core courses. (The core courses are PNB 5302, 6417, 6418, and 6426.)

•  Must pass a written examination at the end of the first year.

•  Must have at least 30 credits of course work

•  Oral defense : Examination administered by the advisory committee consists of an oral defense of three research questions.

•  Participate in weekly Journal Club.

•  Attend departmental seminars.
